Girls Varsity Squash Reaches MAST Finals in Mercersburg, Pa.
After having beaten the St. Catherine’s team in a close 5-4 match earlier in the week, the EHS players knew that they would be in for a struggle as they stepped onto the squash courts.
Even numbered players Karla Domingues ’20 (#2), Sabrina Teope ’18 (#4), Jonesy Wilbanks (#6), Trudy Holmes ‘19 (#8), and Isabelle Holt ’18 (#10) were up first. Holt won her exhibition match 3-0, and four other players split their matches. Both Teope and Wilbanks lost to strong St. Catherine’s players, while both Domingues and Holmeswon their matches 3-1. In the second round of play, the Maroon and Black came up a bit short, with only two of the odd-numbered players ending up in the win column. Lindsey Harrison ’19 (#5) and Lilly Whitner ’19 (#7) both won 3-0, while Nicole Carino ’19 (#1), Mac Faughnan ’19 (#3), and Margaret Collett ’18 (#9) all lost in three games. Domingues was awarded the “Player of the Day” distinction by team captains for her efforts both on and off the court throughout the tournament. In addition to providing great coaching in-between games for many of her teammates during the Mercersburg match, Domingues played one of the best matches of her career against St. Catherine’s--against the same opponent to whom she’d lost in five-game matches in two previous matches since early December--Domingues ensured that this time the result was different!
