Girls Varsity Squash Edges Out St. Catherine’s 5-4
The girls squash team hosted St. Catherine’s School for a rematch between two evenly-matched teams.
Although EHS had won eight of the 14 total matches in the first encounter, St. Catherine’s eked out a 5-4 victory for the first nine matches. This time, the girls were ready, focused, and determined to do better. After many close matches, EHS finally prevailed 5-4 – and 10-4 in overall matches - to improve its record to 5-1 for the season.
Isabelle Holt ’18, playing at #9, and Lindsey Harrison ’19 (#5) dispatched their opponents with relative ease and cruised to 3-0 wins, while Nicole Carino’19 (#1) lost 0-3. The other six matches could have easily gone either way. In three matches lasting 4 games each, Lilly Whitner ’19 (#7), after narrowly losing the first game 11-13, regrouped to continue her strong recent play and won the next three games to prevail 3-1. Both Sabrina Teope ’18 (#4) and Mac Faughnan ’19 (#3) fought hard for every point but came up short 1-3 in games.
Karla Domingues ’20 (#2), Trudy Holmes ’19 (#8), and Jonesy Wilbanks ’19 (#6) each played five-game thrillers. While Karla narrowly lost her match, both Trudy and Jonesy had to battle for every single point and played excellent squash to tip the balance in favor of the home team.
In the exhibition matches, Margaret Collett ’18 (#10), Lilly Schmactenberger ’19 (#13), and Colby Grover ’19 (#14) had no difficulty in winning 3-0. Both Janie Stillwell ’18 (#11) and Lily Dolan ’20 (#12) played 4-game matches to win 3-1.
