Boys Varsity BBall Loses to top-ranked Wilson

Episcopal faced the WIlson Tigers in the semifinal round of the Bullis Tournament, and they boast an impressive collection of talent from Washington, DC.
Wilson came in to the game ranked no. 3 by the Washington Post, and last year they finished 29-4. EHS was excited about the opportunity to face another impressive opponent for the second time in as many days, and for the fans in attendance the game did not disappoint. The first quarter was like a prize fight between two great athletes, both landing blows both on offense and defense. After a frenetic pace, the Tigers led the Maroon at the end of the first quarter by a score of 24-22. Things would settle down just a bit in the second quarter, but Episcopal remained relentless in their pursuit of the ball on the glass, and the team was able to erase Wilson’s small lead, and the Maroon led at the break by a score of 42-41.

The third quarter was more of the same; each team making impressive plays on offense, and getting defensive stops when necessary. Episcopal took a seven-point lead at one point, but Wilson quickly fought back with some strong finishes around the basket. At the end of three periods, Episcopal held a small lead, and they led the Tigers 63-61. The final quarter of the game saw several lead changes, and terrific play by both teams. In games like this, it is the smallest of margins that can make a difference. EHS had a couple of opportunities to extend the small lead, but Wilson was able to come up with some timely stops on defense. As the game was tied with just over five seconds remaining, Wilson’s leading scorer went up for an off-balance and well defended shot, but the ball dropped through the net just as the buzzer sounded. Episcopal lost a heart-breaker by a final score of 80-78. Losses are never easy, but this was a well-played game by both teams, and EHS made some real strides as a team in this forty-eight hour span.
