The girls’ varsity lacrosse team has spent the last week in Virginia Beach for a week of training, three state games, and lots of quality time together off the field. The team returned 15 players from last year’s squad and has added eight new players to their roster, including five freshmen, and they were excited to get on the road and start their game schedule earlier than usual this year.
While in Virginia Beach, the team won all three of their state games by convincing scores. The week began with a 15-4 win over Bishop Sullivan. While the final score was lopsided, EHS was only up by one at the half (4-3) and they used an 11-1 run over the second half to secure the win. The second half run was truly spurred by the work done on defense, both in our settled zone defense but also in our re-defending ride, which eventually wore down the Bishop Sullivan team and allowed EHS to break away.
On Thursday, EHS competed against Norfolk Academy. Traditionally a strong state competitor, this was an important game for EHS, and the girls had trained with this opponent in mind. They opened the game with their first goal less than 30 seconds into play, but NA answered back a little over a minute later. After five minutes of play, the two teams were tied at 2-2, but Episcopal would use a relentless ride and high-pressure settled defense to continue to move the ball back to the attacking end of the field where Episcopal was disciplined and united in generating great looks at the cage. The Maroon entered the half up 10-3 and never looked back on their way to a convincing 17-4 final score.
Episcopal wrapped up its three game week with a 14-3 win over Cape Henry Collegiate. The Maroon jumped out to an early lead and took an 11-2 lead into the half. Seven different players scored for the Maroon in this game, and all healthy players suited up to contribute valuable minutes. CHC was an athletic and aggressive opponent, and it was a great mental test for EHS at the end of a long week to continue to play at a high level.
