Girls Crew Performs Well in Regatta

The team had two finishes in the top three spots at the Ted Phoenix Regatta.
With a host of families cheering the team from the banks of the Occoquan River, EHS launched four boats—all four-oared shells.

The novice and second fours did not have heats and proceeded directly to the finals. Due to some weather and other competitions, the novice four's time on the water was limited this week. That did not deter this squad from competing from the first stroke of the race to the very last. After a small misadventure near the end of the race, the stern pair, Sophie Novitsky ‘21 and Lucy Bland ‘21, were determined to get the boat across the finish line and earned third place.

The second four had to adjust to a lineup change after a rower fell ill on Friday. Arabella Dixon ‘21 filled the vacant seat and joined the experienced crew of Lucy Callewart ‘19, Valeria Carrion ‘18, Leila Wargotz ‘19, and Noelle Weaver ‘19. The team rowed well considering they had never practiced in this lineup and finished 4th out of six teams.

The junior and first fours were able to place among the top three in their respective heats to advance to the finals. In the junior four final, EHS jumped off the starting platform with an aggressive stroke rating that put them in 2nd place, behind Oakton. EHS was able to hold the higher rating throughout the race and spiked it even higher during the sprint. The junior four trailed Oakton at the finish line and placed 2nd out of 11 boats. Most impressively, the margin of victory over third place was sizeable (11 seconds).

In their heat, the first four settled into a comfortable rhythm during the first 1000 meters and had to employ a solid sprint to advance to the finals. In the finals, the boat was focused on pushing the pace earlier in an effort to race with the lead crews. Racing against their stiffest competition of the season in the finals, the first four accomplished their goal and rowed faster during the opening two-thirds of the race and held off West Springfield, West Potomac, and Fairfax to earn EHS another top three finish.
