Boys JV Basketball Falls to Bishop Ireton

On Tuesday afternoon in their second game of the season, the JV boys took to the court against a very strong Bishop Ireton squad.
From the opening tip, the Maroon knew that they were facing an aggressive, hard-working, and disciplined team in the Cardinals. The opening minutes were scoreless as both teams adjusted to the tough defensive play on both sides. Max Gregory '21 cracked the seal after about three minutes and got to the hoop for the first bucket of the game, but scoring remained difficult. John Boyles '20 and John Moses '19 managed to add a couple of baskets for the Maroon, but at the end of the first quarter, the score was just 6-5, EHS in the lead.

In the second quarter, the Cardinals slowly gathered momentum with a couple of patient offensive series and several offensive rebounds. Though the disciplined Maroon defense made it difficult for Ireton on offense, the Cardinals continuously found a way to get rebounds and second—and, sometimes, third—shots. On the offensive end for the Maroon, Boyles led the charge, and Hubert Wood '20 knocked down a nice baseline shot, but the aggressive Ireton defense seemed to keep EHS from finding a consistent rhythm. At the half, the Maroon were down five points, 21-16, but still very much in the game.

The Cardinals emerged from the locker room with added energy and focus. They adjusted and found the cracks in the EHS zone to repeatedly get good shots in the paint. Luckily for the Maroon, Ransdell McCauley '20 fought hard around the basket to score six points, and Gregory knocked down a three-pointer and a couple of free throws to keep the Maroon within striking distance. However, in the fourth quarter, the Maroon simply couldn’t seem to chip away at the lead that Ireton had built, and the Cardinals’ press repeatedly caught the Maroon off guard. Though EHS fought hard to keep it close, Ireton’s aggressive rebounding and defensive play ultimately won out. The final score was 46-37, Ireton.
