Students in Liz Vorlicek's Advanced Ceramics and Advanced Painting classes visited the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery to experience the "State Fairs" exhibition, which celebrates art made from creative, unusual, and upcycled materials. The students encountered a life-size cow sculpted from butter, a dress composed entirely of butter labels, and a towering pyramid constructed from canned food in glass jars. Inspired by the exhibition's inventive use of materials and expansive forms of expression, students explored how artists push boundaries while also appreciating more traditional crafts like quilting and ceramics, gathering ideas to bring back to their own creative practice.
