Despite the frigid temperatures in February, 20+ students submerged themselves in icy water in front of Callaway Chapel to raise awareness of climate change and funds for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN), a regional organization that advocates for climate-friendly policies across the Mid-Atlantic.

Every February, CCAN hosts a polar bear plunge into the Potomac River in an effort to “keep winter cold.” Undaunted by the sewer leak in the Potomac which made it unswimmable, the “Maroon Plungers,” led by Meredith P. ’28, brought the plunge to campus.

The event came together through the efforts of the Sustainability Club, led by Isabel H. ’26, the Service Council, and faculty members Steve Castle and Molly Pugh. So far, the students have raised over $1,200 for CCAN.
