Students in Alec Robinson’s Latin 3 Honors class have been studying how Greco-Roman culture influenced and persisted in the Byzantine Empire that succeeded it. To deepen their understanding, students visited Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., to explore the “Medallions: The Art of Politics and Generosity” exhibit, which showcases Roman medallions from late antiquity. Students also viewed the museum’s permanent collection of Hellenistic and Byzantine Roman art and artifacts, connecting their classroom study of cultural continuity to the physical objects that bridged the classical and Byzantine worlds.
