Biography:
Dr. Hummel believes that when you discuss globalization, "it is not just a matter of knowing and visiting other places, but understanding the philosophic and religious perspectives that undergird those civilizations." Thom had ample opportunity to encourage such interaction as a teacher of theology and now as one of Episcopal's chaplains. Thom served as the chair of the theology department from 1987 to 2017.

A member of the American Academy of Religion and the Conference of Anglican Theologians, Thom also was an adjunct professor of church history at Virginia Theological Seminary from 1990 to 2015. He has written one monograph on pilgrimage, "The Patterns of the Sacred," and contributed to eight books and written numerous articles on the history of Jerusalem. Thom is a senior fellow of the Christian Heritage Research Institute in Jerusalem and, as such, has helped organize and participated in a series of international conferences in and on Jerusalem.

He spends his summers in Jerusalem, Oxford, or Paris when he and his wife Ruth are not enjoying their garden in Old Town Alexandria.
