Biography:
Alan began his career in education at Asheville School in North Carolina 22 years ago. He earned his Ph.D. in Russian history from Georgetown University in 2016, during which time he lived, worked, and conducted extensive archival research in the Russian Federation. This research would become the basis for a book on the Russian national park movement. Before coming to EHS, he taught classes in Russian, environmental, world, and European history at the College of William and Mary, West Virginia University, and Loyola University, Md. His realization that he could have a greater impact teaching in high school led Alan to leave his university position to fill in as a sabbatical replacement at EHS. Nearly four years of teaching at Episcopal has affirmed to Alan that high school education is where he is most fulfilled professionally.

At EHS, Alan teaches modern world history and two advanced history electives — global communism and modern Middle East. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he serves as an assistant wrestling coach and is a member of the North Dorm Team. Alan and his wife, Tatiana, live off-campus in Arlington with their two children.
