A reflection from Lucy Whittle Goldstein ‘97, P ‘27
Assistant Head for Strategic Initiatives & Dean of Faculty
I often reflect on what is at the heart of Episcopal. What makes us who we are? The answer, inspired by the tireless dedication I witness in our faculty every day, is simple: it is our deep, intentional commitment to our students and to each other.
As an EHS student in the late 90’s, I felt the faculty’s deep commitment to my growth as a student and, more importantly, as a person. Now that I am both a teacher and administrator at my alma mater, as well as the parent of a daughter in the class of 2027, I am proud to be part of that covenant — the agreement we all make to know, challenge, love, and inspire each of our students.
I feel it when I see a colleague going deep into the woods to motivate an advisee on the final turn of a cross country meet. I see it when our students and faculty stand for a roaring ovation after a powerful student Chapel Talk or brave musical performance. I experience it through the incredible care and support my daughter’s Honors Spanish 3 teacher gives her as she navigates the ever-challenging junior year.
I also see that commitment as my colleagues pursue academic excellence, constantly learning and growing as education rapidly changes, yet holding fast to the pillars that have made an Episcopal education so special over many years: fundamentals, soundly taught; intellectual courage in taking risks; a strong writing program; fabulous arts and humanities offerings; excellent STEM programs; and the best-integrated experiential learning program I know of, firmly based on using Washington as a classroom.
I think the diploma each EHS graduate receives upon walking across the stage on the Front Circle is a powerful symbol. For as long as anyone can remember, every faculty member signs each diploma. It’s a process that takes significant time and effort, but its meaning is rich: we are a village of adults, walking the full EHS journey with each student, from their first day to their last. We are with them every step of the way, and diploma-signing is our way of saying, “We were here, in this special place, together, and we will always be connected.”
So, why Episcopal? To be known, challenged, loved, and inspired by the very best teachers, advisors, coaches, and mentors one could ever hope for. They are the heart and soul of this School, and they are waiting to get to know you! Are you ready to be known?
