Biography:
In 1997, when he was working as an industrial chemist and manager of a staff of 20 at L'Oreal in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Javier was in charge of a corporate training team. The excitement of helping others learn led to a strong desire to teach full-time. He was accepted to Harvard University's mid-career math and science program. Thus began a new life of great joy in education and a 20-year teaching career.

At Episcopal, Javier teaches biology and environmental science using the 130-acre campus as a classroom, and he serves as assistant coach to the girls varsity soccer team. He lives off-campus with his wife Liz (whose father is EHS '61), their children Nathaniel and Beatriz, and their betta fish, Moonshimmer.

Javier, who played soccer every day growing up in San Jose, Costa Rica is a DC United fan, a foodie (ask him about paella!), a science fiction aficionado, a mountain biker, and a wannabe River Runs Through It fly fisherman.

Before coming to Episcopal, Javier taught math, chemistry, and biology in inner-city Boston public schools for a decade. He then taught for nine years at McDonogh School, where, in addition to teaching biology and environmental science, he served as assistant coach to the girls varsity soccer team, winner of six IIAAM championships; faculty advisor to the Latinx students association; D4M, a club meant to promote multiracial diversity at the school; chess club; and as the mentor to new teachers.
