Winter Athletics Season Sees Records Broken, All-American Performances

The winter athletic season at Episcopal was highlighted by a number of both team and individual records, including record-setting performances in track and field, a new EHS career scoring record in girls’ basketball, and several other All-American caliber individual performances.
A team-by-team collection of highlights from the winter season:

The girls’ varsity basketball team (13-15) battled through its first season in the ISL-AA division in several years, advancing to their divisional tournament semi-final with a big upset win over #2 seeded Flint Hill. The Maroon hoopsters also clinched a home game for the opening round of the VISAA Tournament as the #7 seed in the State. Senior Lexi Weger was named first-team All-League in the ISL-AA and finished her EHS career with 1,458 total points, breaking the scoring record for girls’ basketball.

The boys’ varsity basketball team (19-10) provided some thrilling nights in Hershey Athletic Center, starting out the year with a well-earned Top 10 recognition in the Washington Post area rankings and winning the Sleepy Thompson tournament in December. The Maroon almost avenged a lopsided loss to Bishop O'Connell earlier in the year, falling 57-56 in the VISAA state quarterfinals to end their season after winning their first-round game as the #6 seed.

The boys’ wrestling team’s season has been highlighted by some strong individual performances on the mat. Junior leader William Smith followed up his 8th place finish at the VISAA Championships in 2017 with a 4th place finish in 2018 and a berth to represent Episcopal at the Prep Nationals Tournament. Smith’s remarkable season ended by earning a spot in the consolations third round which is the highest finish for The Maroon since 2011.

Both varsity squash teams turned in solid team performances this season. Highlights from the boys’ season include a second place finish in Division IV at the prestigious US Squash High School Team Championships, the best-ever finish for an EHS boys’ team. The performance earned EHS the distinction of being one of the Top 50 High School boys’ teams in the country. The team also retained the coveted Amos-Willett trophy with two decisive wins over Woodberry forest and finished its season with a Team Title at the Episcopal Squash Invitational

The girls’ squash team finished its season with an impressive 11-3 record and a strong showing at the Nationals. The team competed in Division III, the highest-ever divisional placement for an EHS squash program, ultimately taking 5th place by way of a victory in the Classic Plate final. Junior Nicole Carino, EHS’ #1 player and a 2016-2017 US Squash All-American, was recognized by the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club as one of the Athletes of the Month for February, marking the first time in ASC history that the honor has been bestowed on a squash player.

The girls’ and boys’ indoor track & field teams have put in some significant time on Cathcart Track in Flippin Fieldhouse, and it paid off as the season came to a close. The boys 4x200m team extended their season by qualifying for the New Balance High School Nationals Championships held at historic Armory Track in New York City. The girls’ team had a historic day the State Championships meet, taking the 4x800m State Title for the first time in school history while running a new school record and State Meet record time. The girls 4x200m team would also win the State championships to give Senior Bijee Jackson her second state win after placing 1st in the 55-meter hurdles in the same meet. The Maroon went on to compete at the prestigious Eastern States Championships in New York City, where the team returned with two new school records, and the boys National qualifying 4x200m team finished in the bronze medal position.

The varsity climbing teams had very different seasons. For the boys, it was a rebuilding year after losing six climbers to graduation and study abroad. The team relied on three returning climbers to teach the new boys the ropes. Although the group did not win a meet, they fought close battles in each competition and grew in their skills and abilities. They will be formidable next year. Kidron Kollin earned honorable mention in the end-of-season awards.

The girls, on the other hand, brought back a very deep team of skilled climbers and added an impressive group of freshmen to the mix. They won all but two meets, and often beat the boys teams as well. The team had a disappointing day at the championship and ended up finishing third, but overall it was a great season which will return all but two girls next year, so there are high hopes for a championship in 2019. Gracie Guest earned 1st Team All-League honors, and Jane Owen was recognized as 2nd Team All-League.
