Science Olympiad Fares Well in "Rebuilding Year"

In February, members of the EHS Science Olympiad team competed at the Northern Virginia Science Olympiad Regionals at Woodson High School.
The Episcopal team was comprised of students in the Science Olympiad afternoon option as well as several students who volunteered their time to prepare for test events. With 34 teams from across the metropolitan area and the state in attendance, the stalwart EHS Science Olympians represented the Maroon and Black in strong fashion, said faculty advisor Dr. Kim Olsen.

Highlights included:
  • The dynamic duo of Juliet Faris '19 and Nettie Webb '18, who placed an exceptional 7th place in the challenging "Write It - Do It" event after limited practice at the end of the season.
  • New Olympian Jake Lee '21 led the way with partner Julian Gu '18 in building a complex Rube-Goldberg machine in the afternoon option, earning 9th-place honors in "Mission Possible."
  • Gu also paired with Alex Allahar '19 to earn 9th place in "Fermi Questions," a difficult test where students need to create rough estimates of quantities that are nearly impossible to measure.
  • Noah Beamon '18 and Calyle Peyton '19 continued a great EHS tradition of strong work in "Hovercraft," but a mechanical fault with the track layout led to their hovercraft placing in 9th, a result that belies the formidable construction work of their season.
  • Many thanks to volunteers Faris, Chris Kim '21, Mei Kuo '19, and Webb for joining our core team and learning more about the program. I am sure that many of them will carry their experience into the 2018-2019 season.
Only three of this year's Science Olypians will graduate in June, meaning next year's team is likely to return a core group with useful hands-on experience with how the competition and individual challenges are structured.

"We are so grateful to Mr. (Jim) Chesson, who chaperoned the team and volunteered at the tournament while I was acting as an Event Supervisor," Olsen said. "Mr. Chesson introduced Science Olympiad to Episcopal 15 years ago, and his support and excitement for this team have been fundamental to our success for many seasons. We cannot thank him enough for being our #1 fan!"
