Two Wrestlers Place, One Set for Nationals

Seven members of the Varsity wrestling team competed in the VISAA championships, held at Woodberry Forest School.
The tournament, which is the Virginia Independent School State tournament for wrestling, includes 27 Independent Schools from around the state. Featured in the tournament field are the teams currently ranked 1st and 5th across all classifications in Virginia. Six out of seven EHS wrestlers advanced to day two of competition, with William Smith '19 coming in 4th place at 182 against an opponent from Paul VI, and Christian Wright '18 in 8th place at 285 against an opponent from Benedictine. By virtue of his “top four” finish, Smith qualified for the Prep National tournament this weekend.

Tournament notes:
  • Brenton Smith '21 returned to action after missing two weeks due to injury. He took the 13th seed the distance, defending shots and maintaining his stance.
  • Chineme Agulanna '20 also returned to action after missing over a week from injury. He came within a match of placing, ultimately losing to the 7th place finisher.
  • Yoyo Lu '21 had his best performance as an Episcopal wrestler, as he went 2-2 with a fall and a decision in the consolations. He came within a match of placing before losing to the eventual 4th place finisher.
  • Jay Kim '19 also came within a match of placing, losing to the eventual 4th and 6th place wrestlers.
  • Chad Calderwood '20 went 2-2 with two pins as he came within a match of placing.
