Ten Athletes Commit to Play at Next Level

On February 12, the big Maroon family celebrated 10 students committed to continuing their athletic careers at the college level at a special commitment recognition ceremony in the Hershey Athletic Center.
These 10 join four other seniors who announced their commitments in the fall, with another group expected to make announcements later in the spring.

“Fewer than one in ten high school athletes get the opportunity to play in college,” said Jim Fitzpatrick, director of boys athletics at Episcopal. “Given how tough it is to get those offers at any level, we aim to celebrate all of our students fortunate and committed enough to have that chance to grow and develop in their chosen sports.”

Two of the commitments — Tola Banjoko (Princeton; Football) and John Pupel (Dartmouth; Football) — will head to the Ivy League, where they will join fall commits Lexi Weger (Princeton; Basketball) and Miles Thompson (UPenn; Lacrosse). Two others committed to football in college, Perris Jones to the University of Virginia and Sergio Portobanco to Georgetown University.

Four more students will extend their lacrosse careers to the collegiate level:
  • Matt Berendsen — Catholic University of America
  • Thomas Kreger — Washington College
  • Erin Phillips — Franklin & Marshall College
  • Hailey Simmons — Drew University
An additional two students committed for squash, as Keil Reedich will play at Haverford College, and Shearer Xi at Colby College.

"All ten individuals celebrated today have made a tremendous impact on the Episcopal Athletics program,” said Jen Fitzpatrick, director of girls athletics. “We're excited to watch them continue to develop as young men and women as they move on beyond the gates of EHS and leave their mark on the impressive list of institutions that they will come to represent on the playing fields."

Episcopal will hold one more commitment ceremony later in the spring. For a complete collection of photos from the day, view below or visit our Flickr site.
