Wrestlers Rank in Top Six for Individual Tournament Results

Seven members of the Varsity wrestling team competed in the Melee on the Metro, hosted by the DC Wrestling Coalition. Twenty-two teams from the DC area, Philadelphia, and Ohio competed against each other.
Included in the tournament field were the team champions from both the Prep league and the IAC. In this competitive field, the Maroon wrestlers faced some of the toughest opponents they had seen all season, finishing with an overall record 9-13 on the day, beating two opponents to whom they had lost last week, and placing 17th out of the 22 teams represented. In addition, William Smith '19 placed 2nd at 182 and Peter Mathews '19, placed 6th at 170. Smith competed in a weight class that included three national qualifiers.

Other tournament highlights:
  • Alex Brown '18 went 2-2 with 1 pin competing in one of the tougher weight classes in tournament. A second-round forfeit landed him in the quarterfinals against the eventual third-place wrestler whose combination of length and experience proved too much for Alex.
  • Chad Calderwood '20 had one of his best wins of the season beating a St. Albans wrestler who had beat him
    the previous week.
  • Jay Kim '19 went 0-2 but together some strong scrambles, particularly in his second bout.
  • Yoyo Lu '21 had a tough first round match, drawing the eventual runner-up.
  • Stefan Olsen '21, competing as a non-scoring wrestler, impressed the coaches with his fight in his
second bout. Wrestling a more experienced opponent from the no. 1 team in all of Virginia, Stefan refused to get pinned, showing the type of toughness we hope will be the hallmark of this team.
