Varsity Wrestling Lost in Woodberry Forest

The Varsity wrestling team traveled to Orange to take on the Tigers of Woodberry Forest in our annual dual meet
The coaches of both schools have worked to schedule this event so as to attract a large crowd from the home school. As a result, the team had the opportunity to compete in a loud gym, giving the boys the opportunity to use the energy as motivation to silence the crowd. In perhaps our best dual meet of the season, we did just that, getting victories in the first five bouts (1 fall, 3 decisions and 1 forfeit), and winning six out of the nine bouts actually contested. Unfortunately, the strong performance was not enough as we gave away a net 18 points in forfeits to end up losing by 15 points (final score 42-27).
  • Jay Kim '19 got the team off to a good start, rallying from an early deficient to win by fall in the second period.
  • Our ninth graders were outstanding; Clay Sailor '21, Yoyo Lu '21, and Brenton Smith '21 all not only won their bouts, but in each case, won hard-fought 6 minute matches. Especially impressive is that none of them surrendered back points.
  • Alex Brown '18 won a workman-like 9-3 decision in which he controlled his opponent throughout the match, giving up only two offensive points.
  • William Smith '19 wrestled one of the best matches of his career, beating a wrestler who beat him decisively three times last year. Down 4-1 in the final 30 seconds, Smith got a reversal and back points as time ran out to win 5-4.
  • Chad Calderwood '20 added to his win total by accepting a forfeit at 138.
  • Filling in for a missing starter, Conrad Suppes '20 competed in his first varsity match at 170. He did a good job maintaining his stance and working for position in the first period and showed good heart in trying to fight off his back.
  • Christian Wright '18 competed against a returning state place-winner. He did a  particularly good job defending a deep shot by his opponent using a front headlock. Though he ended up losing, it was a step forward in his shot defense.
  • Chineme Agulanna '20 continues to demonstrate heart and a willingness to compete that are inspiring. Though he lost his bout to a more experienced opponent, he showed genuine explosiveness and toughness.
