Varsity Wrestling Quad Meet Results

The Varsity wrestling returned to action Saturday January 6 as Episcopal hosted a quad meet in the Bocock wrestling Cage.
Competing in the event were: IAC foe St. Albans, perennial MAC powerhouse Sidwell Friends, and rising VISAA team Saint Pope John Paul the Great. This mix of teams provided strong competition for the Maroon as Episcopal went 1-2 on the day, losing to St. Albans (59-18) and John Paul the Great (45-26), while beating Sidwell Friends (54-18). Despite the team results, in bouts actually contested, Maroon wrestlers had an overall record of 15-14 on the day.

Event notes:
  • Christian Wright ’18 had his best day as Maroon wrestler, going 3-0 with 3 pins.  He is doing a particular strong work from the front headlock position.
  • Clay Sailor ‘21 also went 3-0, winning 2 of those bouts by decision. His bout against John Paul the Great was particularly exciting as he used a cross-face effectively to turn his opponent’s offensive shots into scoring opportunities.
  • Peter Mathews ‘19 was dominant in the top position, going 3-0 with 2 pins.
  • William Smith ‘19 went 3-0, providing some exciting moments. In particular, he hit a ‘lateral drop” on the edge of the mat against John Paul the Great on his way to a technical fall.
  • Alex Brown ’18 faced the toughest competition of the day as he was matched against two of the strongest wrestlers competing in the event (at any weight class). In his bout against John Paul the Great he used a gator roll to nearly turn a wrestler who placed fourth in the State last season.
  • Yoyo Lu ‘21 earned his first varsity win against Sidwell Friends, using a 2-on-1 move from neutral to take his opponent down on his way to a first period pin.
  • Lebby Clement ‘19 had a nice win against Sidwell Friends using a front head-lock to near-side cradle.
  • Chad Calderwood ‘20 earned a nice win against John Paul the Great patiently riding on top before securing a second-period fall with a half-Nelson.
  • The freshmen and first-year wrestlers collectively continue to be a source of inspiration as they show both toughness and ability to listen to coaching while competing. Chineme Agulanna ‘20, Brenton Smith ‘21, Stefan Olsen ‘21, Lu, and Sailor all are establishing an ethos of fighting hard, regardless of position or level of ability of their opponents.
