Varsity Wrestling Splits Tri-Meet

The Varsity wrestling team opened their dual meet season this past week competing at home with back-to-back events, wrestling Randolph-Macon and Potomac School on Wednesday, then taking on the Heights school on Thursday. The Maroon came out of the events with a 2-1 record, beating RMA 30-24, and The Heights 36 - 12, while losing to the Potomac School 33-40.

Match notes from the tri-meet Wednesday:
  • Christian Wright '18 opened our home campaign with a pin. He shook off an early takedown by his RMA opponent to come back with a takedown of his own off a front headlock before using a half-nelson to turn his opponent to a fall.
  • Chineme Agulanna '20 went 2-0 on the day as he earned two forfeits.
  • Jay Kim '20 went 2-0 with a pin and a decision. Against RMA, he followed Christian's lead, using a front headlock followed by a half-nelson to win by fall.
  • Yoyo Lu '21 showed improvement from his previous two bouts, getting to his feet several times from the bottom position.
  • Brenton Smith '21 competed in his first bout ever against Potomac. He was aggressive from the start and did a nice job initially defending the first shot.
  • Jacob Morgan '19 went 1-1 on the day, earning a forfeit but losing against RMA. In the bout vs RMA, Jacob showed good motion off bottom in the first period as he defended attempts to turn him.
  • Chad Calderwood '20 wrestled perhaps the most exciting match of the day against RMA. Down 4-1 in the 3rd period, he scored two takedowns late to tie the match and take it into sudden victory. After a scoreless SV period, Chad ended up losing 6-5 when his opponent was able to escape and then ride him out.
  • Alex Brown '18 went 1-1 on the day. His loss was an 11-3 major decision to a wrestler who placed 3rd in the state last season. Despite the loss, it was one of the best bouts he has wrestled against strong competition as he showed strong movement and explosiveness off bottom.
  • Peter Mathews '19 went 1-1, earning a forfeit and losing an overtime match to the same RMA opponent who beat him 4 days early. It was step forward however, as he tied the bout late to take it into overtime.
  • William Smith '19 went 1-1 on the day. After a win by fall against RMA, he moved up a weight class against Potomac to wrestle a returning state place-winner. He came out strong, turning his opponent twice to go up 7-1. Unfortunately, his opponent was able to reverse and turn him to win by fall.
  • In exhibition matches, Stefan Olsen '21 opened his career with an exciting 7-4 win as he put his RMA opponent to his back in the first period to build a 5-0 he never relinquished. Lebby Clement '18 then followed that up with a dominating first period pin. Lebby also earned points vs Potomac by picking up a forfeit.
