Three Wrestlers Place in Holloway Invitational

This past Saturday, eight members the wrestling team opened their season competing at the Admiral Holloway Invitational Tournament hosted by St. James School. The tournament field featured 13 teams from Pennsylvania, Maryland, DC and Virginia, and included numerous returning league and state place-winners.

Six out of eight wrestlers ended up scoring points as the Maroon finished 7th out 13 in the team standings. In addition, three Episcopal wrestlers made it to the placement matches. Placing for the Maroon were: Clay Sailor '21 (2nd at 106), Peter Mathews '19 (4th at 170) and William Smith '19 (1st at 182).

Match notes:
  • Several members of the team were competing for the first time. Clay Sailor '21 and Chineme Agulanna '20 each earned pins in their first career matches, impressing the coaches with their aggressiveness. Yoyo Lu '21 also competed for the first time as a Maroon wrestler.
  • Jacob Morgan '19 showed genuine improvement from last year as he nearly took down the eventual champion wrestler two different times before losing late in the 3rd period. He then lost his 2nd match by a narrow 4-3 margin.
  • Chad Calderwood '20 opened his Episcopal career with a first period pin. He then lost to the eventual tournament champion before losing by decision in the consolations. In final bout, Chad moved particularly well wrestling from the bottom position.
  • Jay Kim '19 went 2-2 with a first period pin and a 15-0 technical fall. His losses came to the tournament champion and the fourth place wrestler.
  • Peter Mathews '19 went 3-2 on his way to fourth place. In two of his wins, Peter locked up cross-face cradles to secure pins.
  • Clay Sailor won his first two career matches by pins. His strongest wrestling, however, came in the finals as he showed both quickness and good instincts in wrestling a much more experienced senior.
  • William Smith '19 was dominant as he earned 3 pins on his way to his first championship. In the finals, competing against a strong Paul VI wrestler, William won a 2nd period scramble, earned a takedown and then tilted his opponent to a pin (for those not familiar with wrestling, “tilts” rarely end up as pins; Wiliam has done it twice in his career).
The team competes twice this week at home with a tri-meet against Potomac and Randolph Macon on Wednesday and dual meet against The Heights School on Thursday.
