Maroon Beats Bulldogs By A Hair

EHS faced off against undefeated Bullis this past Saturday in its third IAC matchup of the season. The game featured hard hitting defense and tough running from the offenses with a measured amount of passing mixed in throughout the contest.  EHS finished the game on top by a score of 23-21. While there were some excellent plays from both the offense and defense, the key to the victory was special teams.
To that end, the game opened up with a nifty kick return by Melvin Curbeam '20 off of a reverse that set EHS up with favorable field position. The opening drive resulted in a field goal by Paul Pivirotto ’19. Ricky Miezan ’18 then kicked off, the first of his six carefully placed kicks, which pinned Bullis deep into their territory. Bullis was quickly forced to punt, only to have it blocked by Miezan and scooped up for a touchdown by Litchfield Ajavon ’19. Pivirotto followed with the extra point, making the score 10-0 just minutes into the first quarter. EHS and Bullis traded rushing touchdowns in the second quarter bringing the score to 17-7 at halftime.

The second half of the ball game contained several exciting plays. EHS effectively moved the ball into Bullis territory with key special team’s plays and hard running from Perris Jones ’18 and Seth Agwunobi ’18. The Bullis defense, however, held tough and forced EHS to settle for field goals. Pivirotto successfully hit his second and third field goals, the final one to retake the lead after Bullis had gone ahead in the fourth quarter on a long drive during which they converted three fourth down plays.

Ultimately, the EHS defense held Bullis on their final drive forcing a turnover-on-downs. Miezan, Vincent Notzon ’18, John Pupel ’18, and Salim Turner-Muhammad ’19 made key plays down the stretch to put the offense back on the field. Jones converted one more first down behind the steady blocking of Tola Banjoko ’18, Max Meyer ’20, Corbin Holland ’18, David Rondeau ’20, Taylor Burns ’19, and Sergio Portobanco ’18 to bring the game to its 23-21 conclusion.
