EHS Celebrates Character Day

EHS joined more than 130,000 organizations around the world to celebrate the fourth annual Character Day on September 13.
Character Day was founded by Let it Ripple Film Studio to encourage people to think and talk about how to live lives of meaning and purpose.

Students took the lead to design a day of activities to facilitate conversation and action related to character-building.

“I thought Character Day was a great opportunity for faculty and students to reflect — silently and through participating in the activities provided on campus — on their own values and the values our community strives to uphold,” said Bradley Kelly ’18, who with the help of several classmates organized a “gratitude wall” that students and faculty adorned with notes of appreciation.

Other activities encouraged the community to think about enthusiasm, grit, love of learning, and creativity, among other character traits.

Students promoted enthusiasm by greeting their classmates in the morning with coffee, breakfast treats, music, and wishes for a great day. Another activity encouraged grit by challenging community members to work on difficult puzzles. To acknowledge the importance of the love of learning, people were encouraged to leave messages for future readers in their favorite library books. Finally, students organized Episcopal’s very own “escape room,” in which participants had to tap into their creativity to solve a series of challenges representing a variety of important character traits, such as kindness, humor, and curiosity.

“I'm really proud of the way the student leaders brought Character Day to EHS,” said Associate Dean of Students Ben Courchesne. “I presented them with an opportunity and they ran with it. Their authentic interest and incredible energy produced an organic and fun way to celebrate character education at EHS.”
