Heartbreak Home Loss at Hummel Bowl

The game featured two evenly matched teams from start-to-finish as the game was in the balance for all forty-eight minutes.
It was Gilman’s fourth game of the season while EHS was coming off of its first game a week ago. The story line of the game centered on defense and some key special teams and red zone plays. In short, Gilman was able to capitalize on Episcopal's missed opportunities and made the necessary plays to win the game.

Both defenses were able to stifle the opposition’s running game, which made field position an essential component of the game. The defenses played tough and halted drives on both sides until EHS scored a touchdown in the second quarter on an 11-yard pass from Seth Agwunobi ’18 to Melvin Curbeam ’20. The extra point was blocked, which proved to be a critical play down the stretch. The first half ended with a strong drive deep into Gilman territory, but a fumble stopped EHS from adding to its 6-0 lead.

The third quarter was also characterized by strong defensive efforts from both teams. Litchfield Ajavon ’19 and Tola Banjoko ’18 were the leading tacklers for EHS. The offense was able to drive deep into Gilman territory again but had a 32-yard field goal attempt blocked to keep the score at 6-0 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was much of the same with field position being the element that dictated the game. EHS was able to once again move the ball deep into Gilman territory but an interception and long return brought the ball deep into EHS territory, which proved to be the tipping point of the game. Gilman made the critical plays during the final minutes to put themselves in position to win the game as they scored a touchdown with 18 seconds left on the clock. The final score was Gilman 9 and EHS 6.

In sum, the team played hard and showed that they stick together and are supportive of one another during difficult moments. Both teams exhibited excellent sportsmanship throughout the tight contest, a point that was complimented by the officiating crew.
