Afternoon of Community Outreach Stays Close to Home

Following a Wednesday morning where all classes met for the first time, students split up by advisory groups for an early afternoon of "Community Outreach" experiences on or close to campus...
Episcopal had two main aims in Wednesday's community outreach efforts, explained new Assistant Head for Student Life Doug Dickson.

"First, we wanted to help building a solid foundation for relationships in the advisory groups," he said. "Special focus is being given this year to strengthening the significance and role of the advisory groups in the day-to-day student experience at Episcopal. Also, a vital part of putting first-year students at ease in their new home environment is breaking down the larger school population into smaller groups where friendships and acquaintances can be built in healthy ways."

The advisory group, almost all of which are coed and which includes students from multiple dorms, dines together at seated meals four times every week at Episcopal and regularly meets for evening gatherings as well. The faculty advisor to the group is often the first person contacted by parents with questions or concerns.

"Our second purpose was to give all our students a wider view of what the Episcopal community and neighboring community looks like and means to us. We wanted to better familiarize students with their surroundings on campus, with the people who work hard here to make their experience the best it can be. We also took some groups to very nearby areas they will come to know well over their time here."
