Tony Lynn Shaver, Coach

Mr. Shaver served as head basketball coach at Episcopal from 1976-1986. During that span, his teams won 73 percent of their games and never had a losing season. His very first squad had a 17-6 record. His 1982 and 1986 teams won lAC Championships, the first two in School history. The 1986 team, his last at EHS, rang up a 21-2 record and was ranked No.1 in Northern Virginia by the Alexandria Gazette and No. 14 in the Metro area by The "Washington Post. That same team was the first EHS squad to win the prestigious St. Stephen's Tournament, now known as the Sleepy ThompsonTournament. In 1986, Mr. Shaver was recognized as the Virginia Private School Coach of the Year, and the Alexandria Sportsman's Club selected him as their high school basketball Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1986.
As a student, Mr. Shaver played for and learned his coaching philosophy from the legendary Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina. He left EHS in 1986 to serve as head coach at Hampden-Sydney College. During his 17 -year tenure, Mr. Shaver compiled a record of 358 wins and 121 losses for a 75 percent winning record. He made the Tigers a Division III national powerhouse and led them to eight Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles, 12 20-win seasons, and 11 NCAA Division III tournament appearances, including two Final Four appearances. He was named ODAC and South Region Coach of the Year in 1995, 1999, and 2000 and VSID Division III Coach of the Year in 1997, 1999, and 2000. He now is in his third season as head coach at the College of William and Mary.
