Oliver F. Roddey, Jr. '46

Dr. Roddey excelled in three varsity sports during his time at EHS. He was known as a “deadly tackler” in football and was selected as Honorable Mention All-State in basketball his senior year. However, tennis was the sport in which he most excelled. Dr. Roddey was undefeated in his two years at EHS and led the team to two undefeated seasons. He served as captain his senior year and received the Bradfield Cup for Tennis at his graduation.
Off the field, Dr. Roddey served as a Monitor. At Davidson, he played in the #1 position for four years and was the first North Carolinian selected to the Junior Davis Cup Team. He won the Southern Conference singles and doubles championships in 1950. He has been ranked as the #1 men’s player in the South and has won more tennis championships than any other player in North Carolina history. Dr. Roddey has previously been inducted into the Davidson College and North Carolina Tennis Halls of Fame.
