Landon Hilliard III '58

For Landon Hilliard, 1958 was a big year. As one of the first Old Boys to captain three varsity teams in one year, Mr. Hilliard served as a team leader and a role model for the members of the 1957-58 football, wrestling and track teams.
If you peruse the 1958 Whispers, you'll see his name quite often. Regarded as the power and backbone of the 1957 varsity football team, Mr. Hilliard was recognized by the Washington Touchdown Club as its 1957 Metropolitan Prep Player of the Year. He also received All-Metropolitan, All-City and All-Prep honors in the sport, "a fitting tribute to an outstanding exhibition of football talent," a teammate wrote.
According to a teammate on the 1958 varsity wrestling team, "much of the team's success may be attributed to the strength of its leadership. Captain Landon Hilliard not only extended his undefeated streak a second year and repeated his Heavyweight Tournament Championship but also provided a fine example of hard work and practice." And when it came to scoring points for the varsity track team, Mr. Hilliard produced with great strength and speed and was described as running "like a runaway tank."
His leadership extended beyond the athletic arena with his role as a Senior Monitor and member of the Honor Committee. After concluding his athletic career at EHS, Mr. Hilliard continued to excel as a lacrosse player and wrestler on the University of Virginia squads, capturing the Atlantic Coast Conference Heavyweight Wrestling Championship.
Mr. Hilliard is a partner in Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., the oldest and largest private bank in the United States. He also is director of Norfolk Southern and Owens-Corning and was a past president of the University of Virginia Alumni Association. Mr. Hilliard and his wife, Kiwi, reside in Oyster Bay Cove, N.Y.
