Charles Carrington Herbert, Jr. '68

Mr. Herbert was a stand-out in EHS athletics. In football, he set school records for most receptions and reception yardage, and he was selected to the All-Met Team and All-Prep Team as a punter and as a tight end his senior year. He served as co-captain of the track and field team his junior year and as captain his senior year. In most meets, he competed in several events: long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot put, intermediate and high hurdles, and sprints, setting seven school records and earning “high scorer” in his junior and senior years. In his senior year, Mr. Herbert received the Rinehart Medal for athletic worth, the Jack Buchanan Award for football, and the Beaudric L. Howell Award for track and field his senior year, and he was named Alexandria Sportsman’s Club Athlete of the Year for Track and Field.

Mr. Herbert was Head Monitor and a member of the Honor Committee and Athletic Advisory Board. He attended William & Mary on a full athletic scholarship, where he played football for two years before transferring to the University of South Carolina.
