Rising Junior Recognized for Poetry

Olivia Tucker ’19 was one of only two high school students to win the Jacklyn Potter Young Poets Competition
The annual competition, sponsored by the D.C.-based literary and educational nonprofit The Word Works, awards two students with the opportunity to read their work alongside an established poet as part of the Joaquin Miller Poetry Series

“A former EHS English teacher, Mr. Perry Epes ’65, is a part of The Word Works, which is how I discovered the contest,” said Olivia.

The competition called for the submission of five original poems, and Olivia’s work earned her one of just two winning spots. She and the other winner, a rising senior from Maryland, were invited to read their poems alongside poet Roger Sederat at D.C.’s Rock Creek Park Nature Center.

On June 4, Olivia read three poems before guests that included English teachers Molly Pugh and Mitch Pinkowski, and Latin teacher Jeff Streed.

In addition to winning the Jacklyn Potter Young Poets Competition, during Commencement Weekend Olivia was awarded Episcopal’s Charles Fellows Page Award for Excellence in Poetry.
