Dr. Holden Thorp, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at Washington University in St. Louis, as well as the father of Emma Thorp ’17, delivered the induction ceremony address. He used song titles from the Disney movie “High School Musical” —  Getcha Head in the Game, (Don’t) Stick to the Status Quo, We’re All in This Together — to organize his advice for the students.

“The arena is not always an easy place. But you can dare greatly. You have the courage and support to do it, because you live in this big beautiful world with 7 billion other folks who all need each other,” said Dr. Thorp, expounding on his point that We’re All in This Together and using the famous “Man in the Arena” speech from Theodore Roosevelt.

“That’s why we can’t shut people out. We can’t stop listening to the other sides. We can’t create success for some by taking the hope of others. We can’t destroy the air, oceans, and land that we all share. Because when it comes down to it, Wildcats – I mean Maroons, we’re all in this together.”

We invite you to view a video of the day's ceremony below. If you would like to jump directly to the introduction of, and speech by, Dr. Holden Thorp, that section begins at roughly the 47:30 mark.
