Leadership and Ethics Program Explores Empathy and Honor

During Wednesday, April 19’s Leadership and Ethics Program, students explored a variety of leadership themes alongside their classmates.
Danielle Aarsonson of Innerwill, a nonprofit organization devoted to leadership development, facilitated a workshop on empathy for freshmen. A number of hands-on activities encouraged students to try to understand their classmates’ experiences and feelings.

Sophomores read the C.D.B. Bryan ’52 short story “So Much Unfairness of Things,” about a high school boy’s decision to cheat on an exam, and a classmate’s decision to report his offense. The students reflected on the story and its relationship to the EHS Honor Code, particularly the fourth point of the Honor Code, in which students pledge to report classmates who violate the code. The semi-autobiographical story was inspired by Mr. Bryan’s time as a student at Episcopal but is set in the fictional “Virginia Preparatory School.”

Juniors attended a workshop entitled “Bring Out the Best in Others,” delivered by Justin Serpone, Amherst College’s Men’s Soccer Coach and creator of Amherst LEADS, a leadership development program for Amherst student-athletes.

Mary Kate Cary, creator of the nonpartisan documentary “41 on 41” which explores President George H.W. Bush’s leadership style, spoke to seniors about what she learned about leadership and decision-making during her years as President Bush’s speechwriter. In addition to showing scenes from her documentary, she shared several clips that were omitted from the final cut.
