Senior To Spend Gap Year in Germany Before Attending Ivy

After Lauryn King '17 graduates from Episcopal in June, she will not go straight to college. It’s not a matter of acceptance—she was accepted to her dream school, Dartmouth. Instead, King will spend a gap year in Germany before her freshman year.

King received the Congress-Bundestag Scholarship, which is awarded annually to only 250 students in the United States and allows them to spend one year studying in Germany. King will spend her year at a German secondary school, although she does not yet have her assignment.

“The program puts a high emphasis on creating really good pairings between participants with host families,” she said. Now is the time when the program matches students with families. She hopes to find out soon who her host family is so she can get to Germany sometime this summer.

King spent Spring Break her sophomore year in Austria with a group of EHS students led by Dr. Rick Dixon.

“I had just started taking German that year and I was surprised to see how much my stay in Vienna really expanded my German vocabulary,” she said.

“Even though I have been so enthusiastic and determined about attending Dartmouth College, my dream school, spending and year in a foreign country and being fluent in a second language have been life-long dreams of mine. So I am really excited that I will get to do both. I would like to thank Dr. Dixon for introducing me to this wonderful program!”
