Episcopal Science Olympiad Shines in Virginia Tourneys

Episcopal’s Science Olympiad team wrapped up their winter season with two outstanding efforts at the regional and state level.
At the Fairfax Northern Virginia Regional tournament in early March, Episcopal competed against 23 other teams in 19 events across all areas of science and engineering. The team had a fantastic showing, placing 6th overall and earning an invitation to the State Tournament.

Highlights:
  • Noah Beamon and Captain Eric Koo brought home the GOLD in Hovercraft. Upon arriving at the tournament, they were told their hovercraft had to complete the track in 8 seconds. After making their adjustments, their craft timed in at 8:01! Combined with their written test score, they blew away the field.
  • The powerhouse team of Julie Choi and captain Erin Zhang earned a GOLD medal in the Helicopter event, which tested the flying power of a self-built balsa helicopter. They paired up again for a 6TH PLACE medal in Microbe Mission.
  • Erin Zhang, for the second year in a row, was the only team member to medal in every event in which she competed. She partnered with Taylor Redd to also win a 4TH PLACE medal in Anatomy & Physiology.
  • Alex Allahar and Eric Koo earned 5TH PLACE after great written test work and a strong wind generator score in Wind Power.
  • The lights aligned for Julian Gu and Amy Lim, resulting in a 6TH PLACE medal in Optics.
  • Alex Brown and Taylor Redd, two students who volunteered their time to join our construction specialist for this tournament, earned a 6TH PLACE medal in Write It - Do It.
At the 2017 Virginia State Science Olympiad tournament at the end of March, a smaller but determined group of student scientists competed against the best of the best at the University of Virginia.

Captains Eric Koo and Erin Zhang, Alex Allahar, Alex Brown, Noah Beamon, Julie Choi, Julian Gu, and Taylor Redd represented Episcopal with determination and great energy.

The highlight of the day was a Sportsmanship Award given to Alex Allahar and the team by the VASO board for sharing safety equipment with another team so that they could compete. Also, Noah Beamon should be congratulated for earning two State medals in his second season on the team.
