Exciting Win for Girls Varsity Basketball

The squad handled the top-seeded Potomac Panthers on what proved to be a very memorable Senior Night. The 59-46 win created a three-way tie for first place in the ISL standings with two games remaining in the regular season at the time. 
 
Potomac struck first in the contest after converting on the charity stripe, but Lexi Weger '18 quickly followed with back-to-back threes that give Episcopal the advantage. A pair of Maya Goree '18 free throws and a Brooks Buyck '17 layup extended the lead to four, but the persistent Panthers nailed a three-pointer to convey the message that they were in this fight for the long haul. The two hungry squads went head to head throughout the first half, each forcing several ties and lead changes. A Potomac free throw in the closing minutes of the half locked the teams in a 28-28 tie heading into the locker room. 
 
The Panthers came out firing in the third quarter by picking apart Episcopal's defense and scoring four unanswered points. This forced EHS to take a timeout to review their mistakes and refocus mentally. The timeout proved beneficial as the Maroon then went on a 12-0 run sparked by Kailyn Shepherd '19. Episcopal also made a quick change to its defensive tactics and used Weger's length to combat the quickness and athleticism of the visiting team's point guard. Additionally, the combination of Shepherd and Hadiyyah Abdul-Jalaal '17 put a halt to the scoring rampage of Potomac's most prolific threat. Liza-Banks Campagna '17 registered several key steals in the second half while Hope Gray '17 brought poise and intelligence on the offensive end. Episcopal blanked the Panthers by outscoring them 31-18 in the final 16 minutes, and the team erupted in excitement as the final buzzer sounded.
