Girls Varsity Basketball Tames St. Andrews Lions

Earlier this season, St. Andrew's handed us our first ISL loss of the year, thus solidifying their position as the top team in the league. We were determined to learn from that loss, however, and the team worked tirelessly in the weeks following to improve as individuals and as a program. piscopal entered the Lions' Den feeling prepared to face this formidable foe. The anticipation was truly palpable; the stands were packed with boisterous St. Andrew's supporters ready to cheer their team on to yet another victory.

Episcopal performed with such poise and heart in the contest that the Lions were quite frustrated throughout. Each time St. Andrew's went on a run, EHS had a momentum-halting answer: an unselfish assist from Brooks Buyck '17; a strong post move by Maya Goree'18; a ridiculous block by Dymin Gerow '20. We also had a secret weapon that the Lions were not ready for, and her name was Emma Jones '18. Jones utilized her strength and intelligence to secure several key rebounds and hit much-needed buckets, including a buzzer-beating layup at the end of the third quarter.

The team did a fantastic job of ignoring the crowd, the hype, and the pressure to win: they simply competed with the togetherness and toughness that have become the cornerstone of our program. In the final stanza, Lexi Weger '18 gave Episcopal a small cushion by knocking down five unanswered points. Kailyn Shepherd '19 sealed the win by forcing a five-second violation and knocking down a huge three in the final minute of play. EHS remained poised down the line to secure the 40-34 victory.
