Girls varsity basketball holds steady to beat St. Catherine's

On the eve of Mid-Winter Break, the girls' varsity basketball team traveled to Richmond and pulled an incredible upset over St. Catherine's, the fourth-ranked team in the state. With the win, Episcopal stands at 12-8 on the year.

EHS played with unprecedented fire in from the opening tip. Kailyn Shepherd '19 started things off for the Maroon by driving baseline and hitting a tough layup with contact. Moments later, Lexi Weger '18 nailed a corner three out of our sideline inbounds play, and the bench erupted in excitement. When the Saints answered with a trifecta of their own, EHS did a fantastic job remaining poised. Brooks Buyck '17 immediately responded with back-to-back shots in the paint to extend Episcopal's lead, and another three-pointer from Weger at the buzzer gave the team a 19-11 advantage going into the second.

After truly dictating the pace of the game for the first three quarters, the Saints staged an unnerving and nearly successful comeback in the fourth. Maroon became visibly shaken by the full-court defensive pressure and the intense vocal presence of the crowd. St. Catherine's clawed its way back after a number of offensive rebounds and put-backs in the fourth quarter, and cut the lead to one with 2:25 remaining. Forced to foul, the Saints made the mistake of putting Maya Goree '18 on the charity stripe. The junior calmly stepped up and hit two critical free throws with under a minute remaining to give the Maroon a little breathing room. A Sophie Singletary '18 defensive rebound followed by two jumpers from Weger and Shepherd solidified the 55-46 win in the closing minutes.
