“Making it real” Entrepreneurial Pitches Contest Brings Student Ideas to Life

The Entrepreneurial Pitches Contest allows EHS seniors an opportunity to promote and share their startup idea with the community. With only 60 seconds on the clock, the contest encourages students to master the art of storytelling and their public speaking skills. Another year on the Hill, meant another opportunity for CFO Boota deButts ’76 to sound the gong if any student went over time. This year’s judges were Pierce Brennan, chair of the mathematics and computer science department, and Natalie Davies, mathematics teacher and Whispers advisor.

“It’s a nerve-wracking experience for many of them, but they appreciate and recognize the value of it,” entrepreneurial studies teacher Matt Fitzgerald, said. “Ultimately the competition is about bringing a heightened level of focus and energy to their ideas and making it real.”

Students generate ideas when they recognize moments in their own lives when something did not go well, or could be better. Fitzgerald encourages them to use that disappointment as a learning experience. They create an action plan, develop possible solutions, and voila they have a fresh idea for a startup. Some of the ideas this year included solutions for stinky dorm rooms, healthier eating, and improved travel and shopping experiences.
