Henry Fero Schacht ’48

Henry Schacht ’48, a sophomore transfer at EHS, was awarded two letters in basketball and three letters in baseball. He served as the captain of the basketball team his senior year and led them in scoring with 175 points. He scored 13 points in a thrilling overtime victory over Woodberry that clinched the State Prep Championship. According to the 1948 Whispers, “Henry was a true leader in every sense of the word. He was especially valuable when the going got tough, and usually came through when a basket was needed most.”

As the ace pitcher on the varsity baseball team, Schacht also played first base and right field when he wasn’t on the mound. The left-hander threw a 1-0 shutout against Woodberry with a two-hit, nine strikeout, and zero walk complete game. The victory clinched the 1946 State Prep Championship. As a junior, he led the team in batting, posting a .435 average and leading Ed Gregory '48 to write in the Chronicle, "Maybe the boy is another Babe Ruth--shift him to the outfield." He continued his baseball career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After his junior season at UNC, he played one year for the Cincinnati Reds organization.

“Henry was captain of the basketball team, but his best sport was baseball, having pitched at North Carolina and in the minor leagues. He will always be remembered for his 1-0 victory over Woodberry,” Doug Mackall ’49 said.
