Visual Arts Students Recognized For Artistic Pursuits

Ten award-winning visual arts students recently attended the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards ceremony for Fairfax County, Va., accompanied by arts teachers Junko Pinkowski and David Douglas.

Founded in 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have encouraged creativity in teenagers for decades. Notable past Scholastic Awards winners are Ezra Jack Keats, Stephen King, and Cy Twombly. Pieces are awarded keys based on criteria that exemplify the core values of the Awards, including originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal voice or vision. Several EHS students went on to have their art judged on a national level, and were awarded Gold and Silver Keys. Scholastic also awards a number of scholarships, which Isabella Custard ’22 and Emily Wu ’22 received.

“With well over 500 in attendance, the crowd was wowed by the ceremony and the outstanding work of these talented young artists. Our students represented EHS well with their talent, poise, humility, and grace. It really was a very special evening for all of us,” said Douglas.
