Episcopal Names New Medical Director

Episcopal is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Katie Humphries as its new Medical Director.

Relocating from Atlanta, Ga., Dr. Humphries is the Medical Director/Chief Medical Officer at The Healing Community Center, a federally qualified community health center where, in addition to serving patients, she oversees the entire medical team comprising physicians, midlevel providers, and medical assistants. Prior to her current role, Dr. Humphries served as a family medicine physician with Peachtree Immediate Care in Atlanta and Emory at Oak Grove Primary Care in Decatur, Ga. She also is an active adjunct faculty member, teaching medical students, residents, and nurse practitioner students, at Emory University School of Medicine, where she completed her residency.

An board-certified family medicine physician with experience in urgent care, Dr. Humphries has an extensive clinical background providing primary and secondary care to her patients, with much of her professional focus on teenage and young adult care. With a self-identified passion for teaching, Dr. Humphries is known for effectively using those skills to educate her patients in disease management, healthy living, and disease prevention. She also has demonstrated a dedication to lifelong learning and actively continues her clinical development. A humanist at heart, Dr. Humphries’ experience serving underserved populations has given her an in-depth understanding of the psychological, social, and emotional challenges that many in various communities face, as well as valuable insight for effectively communicating with adolescents. Over the course of these past two years, Dr. Humphries has been on the front lines dealing with Covid-19, successfully implementing testing and vaccination strategies for disadvantaged communities in Atlanta.

No stranger to independent schools, Dr. Humphries attended Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Md., where her mother was a teacher. She earned her B.A. from Princeton University and then embarked on her pursuit of a career in medicine through the post-baccalaureate program in pre-medicine at Towson University. Dr. Humphries graduated from the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine at Virginia Tech, where she was named Most Outstanding Student in the Urban Healthcare Department. She completed her residency at Emory University School of Medicine, earning Resident of the Year in 2012, 2013, and 2014, and Chief Resident in 2013-14.

An athlete to boot, Dr. Humphries is an accomplished lacrosse and field hockey player. Her accolades include: US U-19 Women’s Lacrosse World Champion in 1999; NCAA Division I Field Hockey Ivy League Champion in 2000; and NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse National Champion in 2001 and 2002. With an abiding love for lacrosse, Dr. Humphries served as an NCAA women’s lacrosse official for 14 years.

In reflecting on her appointment, Head of School Charley Stillwell said, “Dr. Humphries is really impressive. She is not only well-equipped to lead our Health Center but also has the vision we were seeking to bring the new deButts Health and Wellness Center online next fall. As an exceptional student and talented athlete, she places great importance on both the mental and physical well-being of the students. She is clearly eager to engage with our community, excited to get to know the students, and is already thinking creatively about adding to our health curriculum and wellness program.”

In true Episcopal fashion, students were an integral part of the selection process and spent time interviewing all candidates this summer.

Assistant Head of School for Student Life Phil Spears, who worked most closely with the student leaders, said, “Their participation was inspiring – they asked thoughtful questions, demonstrating a keen awareness of the importance of the position and the positive impact the medical director can have on the community, and the seniors' abiding love for EHS was omnipresent. In their candidate feedback the students were compelled by Dr. Humphries’ positivity, approachability, focus on students’ all-around well-being, and her stated commitment to be visible throughout campus and actively involved with them. Like the students, I found Dr. Humphries to be an impressive person and professional, and it was immediately clear in conversation with her that she would be a great fit for EHS!”

When recently asked what drew her to Episcopal, Dr. Humphries’ response was “...the people!  Every person I met on this journey spoke about the community at EHS and the family feel it has. In addition, I quickly saw that every person I met was at EHS for a reason, and had something special to offer to the community. I love that the focus is entirely on the students and that the faculty and staff are so intentional in their actions.”

Dr. Humphries and her family will officially arrive at Episcopal in early October, as she wanted to thoughtfully manage the transition from her current position. We cannot wait to welcome her aboard!

In the interim, Episcopal is incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Kimberly Caldwell serving as the temporary Medical Director. Dr. Caldwell holds a B.S. from Spelman College and an M.D. from Howard University College of Medicine. Pediatric board-certified, she worked for many years in one of the leading pediatric private practices in the Greater Richmond area. In transitioning to D.C., Dr. Caldwell joined Weatherby Healthcare, a firm that specializes with locum tenens, or temporary placement, of qualified physicians nationwide, as a general pediatrician. Episcopal was fortunate to connect with her through this well-regarded placement group. Dr. Caldwell is already working closely with Director of Health Services Beth Blaum and the Health Center staff to ensure a smooth start to the year.
