Karla Domingues ’20 Earns National Squash Award

Karla Domingues ’20 has been named the female winner of this year's national Tyler Griffin Student of the Year Award, which is sponsored by the Squash and Education Alliance.

The award recognizes two graduating seniors who embody the overarching values of the SEA network: sportsmanship, effort on court and in the classroom, respect and concern for others, integrity, character, and leadership. The award, which will provide a financial grant to cover college-related expenses, goes to two student-athletes — one boy and one girl — from SEA member programs.

Karla, Episcopal's top-ranked player, was voted by her teammates as this year's most valuable player after leading the squad to the U.S. High School Squash Championships, where she won two of three matches. Coach Frank Phillips praised her quiet leadership, selflessness, and generosity as well as her grit and grace.

“She was a student-athlete who humbly navigated Episcopal with class, honor and excellence,” said Phillips. “She never backed down from any drill or exercise; in fact, she embraced the hard work. I recognized this when, after exhaustive sparring, she'd look at me and smile that elusive smile... as if to say, 'I'm ready for one more round if you are!' "
