"The Black Experience at Episcopal": EHS Online Alumni Forum Series Begins Next Week

As Head of School Charley Stillwell noted in his letter on June 8, Episcopal is planning several initiatives centering around understanding and improving the Black experience at Episcopal. Among those are the establishment of a Black alumni network, to include a mentoring program, and a series of online forums this summer in order to open the conversation about race at Episcopal. While we work diligently on the establishment of the Black alumni network and mentoring program, we are also eager to move forward with forums to gather perspectives, experiences, and other valuable information from our Black alumni. We are at once heartbroken and outraged by the stories being shared on social media and with us directly, yet we are grateful for those who courageously share their experiences. We look forward with great urgency to the opportunity to connect personally.

Our first five online forums will take place over the next two weeks, and we invite any alumni who identify as Black or African American to register.

The Black Experience at Episcopal: Online Alumni Forums
Session 1: Tuesday, June 23 at 8:00 PM EST
Session 2: Wednesday, June 24 at 1:00 PM EST
Session 3: Thursday, June 25 at 7:00 PM EST
Session 4: Tuesday, June 30 at 1:00 PM EST
Session 5: Wednesday, July 1 at 1:00 PM EST

As these forums are meant to be an exchange of stories, space is limited to only 20 alumni per session. If demand exceeds the available spots, not to worry: we will be scheduling future opportunities throughout the summer. Also, know that this is our initial effort to reach out to our entire school family. We also will provide forums to hear from Black students, parents, faculty, staff, and all members of our community.

You can register here. What to expect:
  • Registrants will have an opportunity to submit questions and comments in writing both before and after the forum.
  • Be prepared to share the ways in which race shaped your experience at EHS, if you are comfortable doing so.
  • Conversation will be moderated by Louis Smith, Director of Community and Equity.
  • Various leaders of the School, along with representatives from the faculty and Board of Trustees, will attend in a listening role.
Thank you so much to all of you who have previously shared your experiences, resources, and advice with Louis, Head of School Charley Stillwell, and others at EHS. If you are more comfortable sharing your story in writing, please email the Office of Community and Equity at diversity@episcopalhighschool.org and your message will be shared with School leadership. Episcopal High School is committed to becoming an actively antiracist institution and these conversations will help the School become a better, stronger community.
