Signing Day: Six More EHS Students Announce College Athletic Commitments

Six members of the Class of 2020 announced their college athletic commitments yesterday, bringing to 10 the total number of EHS seniors who intend to continue their sports careers at the next level. More announcements are expected in the spring.
Four seniors made their commitments on the first official signing day of the year, in November. They will play at Georgetown; the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Quinnipiac University; and Yale. The latest group of commits includes:

John Boyles, football
Hometown: Traverse City, Mich.
College choice: Wofford College
A two All-IAC pick and an All-State selection this year, John was a co-captain in 2019 and one of Episcopal’s most versatile players, lining up at receiver, linebacker, and even quarterback. “Wofford’s a top-flight academic school; it’s a great fit for a great kid who’s both a great student and an unbelievable athlete,” says Maroon head coach Mark Moroz. Boyles was the leading receiver for EHS this year but will play linebacker at Wofford. “Anytime your leading receiver goes on to college to play linebacker, you know he’s special,” Moroz added.

Elijah Gaines, football
Hometown: Queens, N.Y.
College choice: University of Virginia
Elijah, a wide receiver and defensive back who earned All-IAC and All-State honors his junior and senior years, was elected by his teammates as co-captain two years in a row, collecting the most votes each time. “He’s one of the top three leaders I’ve ever been around as coach,” Moroz said. “I’ve been fortunate to coach him and see his quiet leadership.” At the University of Virginia, Elijah joins a growing power in Atlantic Coast Conference football. The Cavaliers won the ACC Coastal Division last fall before losing to eventual national runner-up Clemson in the conference title game.

Parker Jenkins, football
Hometown: Etlan, Va.
College choice: Dickinson College
Parker played offensive and defensive line, earning All-State and All-IAC honors as a junior. “I could picture him making an impact at Dickinson right away,” Moroz said. “I’m thrilled that he made the decision to go to a school with such strong academics. But he’s a kid I’m going to miss a lot. He’s just fun to be around — one of my all-time favorites to have on the field with me.”

Jamall Mensah, football
Hometown: Coquitlam, Canada
College choice: University of Rhode Island
Jamall was a co-captain and wide receiver and defensive back for the Maroon this year. He had several scholarship offers but chose to go to the University of Rhode Island, which he says felt like home. The Rams recently had three players invited to the NFL combine. “They’re getting a really great player; he’s very dynamic, very fast, and they’re probably going to utilize him right away in their offense,” Moroz said. “He’s also got a high football IQ; he understands the game well.” Jamall also was a standout sprinter for Episcopal’s track teams, earning an All-State selection in the 100-meters and helping the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams to state titles.

Tre Simmons, cross country and track
Hometown: Aquasco, Md.
College choice: Babson College
Tre came from league rival Landon and made an immediate impact, placing fourth in the cross country city championship as a freshman and winning the title as a sophomore and junior. He was also the IAC champion over the 5000-meter cross country distance as a sophomore and will graduate as a three-time All-State performer for cross country. On the track, he was also a league champion in the 4x800-meter relay and the 3200-meter run. “Tre has been a consummate workhorse for the Maroon in the distance events,” said head track coach Damian Walsh. “His ability to absorb a higher and higher volume of training has set him up to have a strong chance of making a big impact at the collegiate level, a privilege that many aspire to but only a few actually achieve.”

Tiffany Stowers, softball
Hometown: Burke, Va.
College choice: Trinity College
“From day one, it was clear that Tiffany would be a force to be reckoned with in the ISL,” says Jen Fitzpatrick, the girls’ athletic director. As a freshman, she led the team to an ISL-A division banner in softball, earning both All-League and All-State honors. She again received All-League honors from the ISL as a sophomore and junior despite battling against a higher level of competition in the ISL’s top (AA) division. “A relentless competitor, she has had a tremendous impact on the EHS softball program,” Fitzpatrick said.
