Maroon Narrowly Falls to Wolves

In their second conseuctive road game of the week, the boys' varsity basketball team headed south to face Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School. The Wolves are a team that plays with great pride and intensity, and what they may lack in some areas of the game, they certainly make-up for them with their energy and effort. The Maroon started the game well, jumping out to a 6-4 lead, but Saint John Paul was the more aggressive team in the opening period. The first half was one of the toughest for the Maroon this season, and the team just did not compete with a sense of urgency. Three games in four days also took a toll on EHS, and both physically and emotionally the team played like a group that was fatigued. It looked grim for the Maroon as we trailed by 19 points at the half, but the game was not over.

In the second half, Episcopal was a completely different team. The Maroon defended with purpose and passion, and we drove the ball to the pain for easy scores on offense. The team chipped away at the lead, and finally with just under a minute to play Episcopal regained the lead 71-70 after a made three-point shot. The Wolves were able to connect on a basket, and then come up with a stop and two free throws to extend their lead to 74-71. EHS had three chances to tie the game in the final seconds, but the last three-point attempt rolled off the rim, and the Maroon fell to Saint John Paul the Great. On a positive note, Episcopal did outscore the home team 45-29 in the second half.
