Fresh Off A Break, Girls Win First Round of Tournament

Episcopal (1-0) faced off against an unfamiliar foe in the first round of the SSSAS Tournament on Tuesday evening. Eager to play their first opponent, the squad earned a lopsided 63-19 victory over Oakcrest High School thanks to stifling defensive pressure and incredibly selfless offense.

Episcopal started the first half strong, jumping out to a 20-3 lead in the opening quarter. In their EHS debuts, Marian Turnbull '22 connected with Cayla Williams '21 underneath the hoop to register the team's first bucket of the season. Haley Sabol '20 was a force on the interior, pulling down rebounds and finishing beautifully around the rim in the opening minutes. Ryan Shepherd '21 netted a pair of three-pointers while classmate Isabel Schneider '21 sank a layup in traffic to further extend Episcopal's lead. The squad incorporated wonderfully unselfish ball movement to befuddle the defensive efforts of Oakcrest, with seven players contributing points in the first quarter. In stanza two, Turnbull hit her second trifecta of the night and Sabol continued to wreak havoc in the paint. The tenacious Chargers fought back with back-to-back buckets, but the Maroon answered with vigor, forcing two shot clock violations and unleashing a scoring barrage to end the half with a 40-8 advantage.

Despite being ahead by such a large number, the team dedicated the second half to improving  defensive rotations, executing offensively, and limiting fouls. Maya Thompson '20 used her quickness and length to frustrate the Chargers on both ends of the floor, tallying seven straight points in just 2.5 minutes. Nora Huffines '20 had a gorgeous rebound and putb-ack in the second half, and newcomers Minta Brice '21 and Liv Krivacek '23 also contributed their first buckets in a varsity uniform. Using her quickness and athleticism, Dymin Gerow '20 tallied six steals and five deflections to go along with her seven points on the night. Much like the first 16 minutes, the Maroon utilized multiple offensive threats to connect with the hoop and ultimately secure an emphatic 63-19 victory.
