Spirit Weekend Triumph: EHS Claims Third Straight Win Over Woodberry

On Saturday, November 10, the scene for one of the nation’s oldest continuous high school gridiron rivalries was nearly football perfect, with chilly temperatures and an estimated 4,000 on hand in the Hummel Bowl.
The Maroon made the day even more special, with an exciting 20-16 triumph that marks Episcopal’s third straight win in the historic annual series, following last year’s 25-21 victory and a 21-7 triumph in 2017.

Episcopal set the tone for the game in the very first minute. James Greene ’21 intercepted a Tiger pass on Woodberry’s second play from scrimmage and made a 25-yard return. Bear Matheson ’20 then sliced nine yards through the Tiger defense for the game’s first score.

The Maroon’s dominance didn’t stop there. The Tigers mustered just nine yards rushing and a total of 134 yards of offense – four fewer than Matheson alone earned on the ground for Episcopal. Quarterback Emmet Morehead ’21 ran for two scores and racked up 180 yards passing, connecting with eight different receivers. Two special-teams miscues led to nine of Woodberry’s 16 points, but when the Tigers threatened in the closing minute of the game, Jamall Mensah ’20 knocked away their last-chance end-zone toss.

The victory proved a fitting conclusion to a Spirit Weekend that brought the EHS community together on campus for a variety of events. The weekend opened with a Veterans Day chapel service with speaker Henry Stoever '84, a Marine veteran who now leads the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges.

Friday also saw the School’s second biennial CONNECT on Campus, which brought 25 alumni to campus to share their wisdom and experience with students. Later in the afternoon, more than 100 EHS community members gathered in Hershey Athletics Center for the ceremony to induct the 2019 class of EHS Hall of Fame alumni athletes.

The EHS performing department hosted a special double feature: “Happily Ever After,” a Disney-themed dance performance, and “Lost Girls,” the fall one-act play. And that night, the traditional bonfire was followed by the annual Spirit of the High School Dinner, with alumni and their families reconnecting and getting ready for The Game.
