New Year, New Faces, New Student Leaders

The start of the school year will bring a record-breaking group of new students to Episcopal along with new faculty and a new slate of student leaders.
NEW STUDENTS
EHS welcomes its 150 incoming students to campus this weekend for orientation. More than 750 students applied for admission to the School for the 2019-20 year, a record. The new students arrive with a grade-point average of better than 3.6, another new high, and they come from 23 states, the District of Columbia, and 14 countries. Nearly a third are students of color.

NEW STUDENT LEADERS

This past weekend saw the arrival on campus of nearly 50 student-group leaders to prepare for 2019-20. These included the monitors, who are seniors, and the seniors who lead two other key groups: the Discipline Committee and the Honor Committee. Lists of the leaders for these groups and other campus organizations (Cheerleaders, Service Council, etc.) are available here.

NEW FACULTY

The faculty officially arrived earlier, on Tuesday, August 20, with teachers beginning professional development and preparation for the arrival of students and the first classes on September 3. The day began with a chapel service for all staff and faculty in Callaway Chapel, an EHS tradition. The School also welcomed new staff and faculty members to the community. They are:

Benjamin Douglass,
senior associate director of admissions
Douglass joins Episcopal after serving for 12 years in admissions and enrollment-management roles at the Saint James School (Hagerstown, Md.) and Blue Ridge School (St. George, Va.). He has a particular expertise in the area of recruiting international applicants. Earlier in his career, Douglass served as a middle school science teacher at the Army and Navy Academy (Carlsbad, Calif.). He also will serve as a coach for Episcopal’s new swim program.

Joseph Eldred, social studies teacher
Eldred is returning to Episcopal after a stellar spring semester as a long-term substitute in the Social Studies department. Prior to Episcopal, he served in the Navy JAG Corps and was stationed at the Pentagon, in California, and as far away as Bahrain. In addition to teaching, Eldred will coach cross country and cross training.

Derek Fuller,
head of security
Fuller will be joining the staff soon from his position in Albuquerque, N.M., with the FBI. A longtime veteran of the agency, he has broad expertise in investigations and crisis management. While in the Navy, he was a flight officer and served as chief security officer and public information officer.

Natasha Kollaros, counselor
Kollaros joins EHS as a part-time counselor. Most recently, she served as a therapist at a local mental health care facility. A boarding school veteran, she previously served as both the director of residential life and the director of counseling at St. Margaret’s School (Tappahannock, Va.).

Kyle McCuskey, assistant athletic trainer
A native Midwesterner, McCuskey comes from the Orthopedic and Sports Rehabilitation Center in Minnetonka, Minn. Additionally, he has experience working with Division I collegiate athletics programs in North Dakota.

Mike McGowan, social studies teacher
McGowan taught at EHS from 2001 to 2004 and 2005 to 2007. He also has chaired the history department at the Thacher School (Ojai, Calif.) and taught at the American School in London. In addition to his teaching duties, McGowan will coach basketball and baseball.

Thomas Owen, English teacher
Owen began his school career in the communications office at the Brooks School (North Andover, Mass.) before moving into a faculty role as an upper school English teacher at St. Luke’s School (New Canaan, Conn.). At St. Luke’s, he taught 9th graders and served as an advisor and coach. Owen joins the English department while Tim Rogers is on sabbatical. In addition to teaching, he will serve as the assistant faculty sponsor for the yearbook.

Brileigh Pinkney, assistant director of admissions
Pinkney comes to us most recently from the Foxcroft School (Middleburg, Va.), where she spent the last few years focused on recruitment and marketing in the admissions office. Prior to Foxcroft, she was part of the admissions teams at the Knox School and the Ross School. Pinkney will live on Dalrymple Dorm and help with our new swimming program.

Grace Pratt, interim assistant chaplain
Pratt joins Episcopal after leading parishes and youth ministries in the Northern Virginia area for the last several years. As a parish priest, she focused on the development of middle school and high school students, leading mission trips and camps, as well as teaching and counseling for confirmation.
