State Titles and Long-Standing Commitment Celebrated at Spring Athletics Banquet

Episcopal athletes and coaches gathered last week to celebrate the spring season and honor the achievements and commitment of individual teams and players.
Coaches presented a slate of some 30 individual awards, and many athletes were recognized with Gold Awards for participating in a varsity sport for three consecutive seasons. Also, John Moses ’19, varsity baseball co-captain, and Jonesy Wilbanks ’19, girls’ lacrosse co-captain, were selected by their fellow captains to talk about each team’s season.

Highlights from the spring include:
  • The varsity baseball team had its best season in memory, earning a spot in the VISAA playoffs for the first time in program history and a state ranking that reached a high of No. 3 during the season. Seniors Jacob Morgan, John Moses, and Thomas Windels closed out four-year careers with a satisfying third straight defeat of Woodberry.
  • Girls’ varsity crew was stacked with six seniors — Arden Faires, Juliet Faris, Sidney Lewis, Gardiner McGuire, Gray Shiverick, and Noelle Weaver. The team swept duel races against Gunston School and Sidwell Friends. At the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championship, both varsity fours placed in the top six. And at the prestigious Stotesbury Cup Regatta, a senior four placed 18th out of 57 teams.
  • The golf team finished third in the IAC and had a nice run in the IAC Tournament. Cole Wise ’19 and Paul Pivirotto ’19 earned spots on the All-IAC team as well as Collier Lilly ’21.
  • Boys’ varsity lacrosse advanced to the state quarterfinals before losing 14-12 in a heart-breaker to St. Anne’s-Belfield. The team finished ranked third in the VISAA — its highest finish since its 2011 state championship season — and also broke the School’s scoring record. The team graduates 11 seniors: Tyler Bryan, Will Cory, Michael Grogan, Collin Hwang, Jack Kelly, Coleman Marlatt, Luke Mascatello, Archer Staunton, Charlie Stephenson, Juanell Walker, and Thomas Williamson.
  • Dominant wins for girls’ varsity lacrosse — led by seniors Maddie Blalock, Natalie Block, Sam Fanning, Mary Ives Giblin, McKenna Gribbon, Lindsey Harrison, Catie Medick, Olivia Morton, and Olivia Sokol — included a 17-4 defeat of National Cathedral in the Hummel Bowl and a nail-biting 12-11 away victory over Bishop O’Connell. The team lost by one or two goals to six of the top teams in the conference and state.
  • A young softball team led by seniors Halsey Ziglar and Nicole Cariño punctuated its season with a 17-7 trouncing of Madeira in which many freshmen, sophomore, and junior Maroon players contributed key hits and defensive plays. Standout pitcher and hitter Tiffany Stowers ’20 will lead this group again next year.
  • Boys tennis finished in the top 10 of the VISAA, with key wins including triumphs over Paul VI and Bishop O’Connell. The team was led by seniors Garrott Braswell, Ray Kang, Will Riddle, Matson Schorr, and South Wallace.
  • Girls’ varsity tennis had an undefeated season, winning 55 matches and losing only eight. Senior captains Gracie Hughes and Lilly Schmachtenberger posted 9-0 records, and Belle Broll ’21 also finished undefeated.
  • The girls’ track and field team claimed two individual state championships, with Claire Boehm ’20 winning the 1600-meter run and Alli Boehm ’20 taking the crown in the 800-meter race. The two also were part of a 4x400-meter relay squad, with Jahsaiah Moses ’19 and Regan Simmons ’21, that broke the school record twice — once at Penn Relays and later at the state meet, posting a time of 4:02.06.
  • In boys' track and field, at Penn Relays, the 4x100-meter boys’ squad of Bryce Steele '21, Barry Curtis '19, Jamall Mensah '20, and Aaron Lindsey '21 blazed through the preliminaries to become the first team in EHS history to advance to the national finals at the meet, where they finished seventh. At states, Dante Jackson ’21 took the championship in the 400-meter race with Lindsey close behind in second.
